Interim professorship „Creative AI + Design“

Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently permeating various areas of life, work, and multiple fields of application. The implementation of AI technologies places new demands on the designers of the future, as well as on design education. The AI+Design Lab at HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd (aid-lab.hfg-gmuend.de) conducts applied research into innovative areas of application for AI, the design for and designability of the technology, and - crucially - its integration into teaching. The AI+Design Lab and its research activities have been established over the past four years as part of the research project “KITeGG — Making AI Tangible and Comprehensible: Connecting Technology and Society Through Design” (gestaltung.ai), a joint project of five universities on the integration of AI in design teaching funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Following up this project, the HfG seeks to continue the Lab as an innovative hub at the intersection between design, design education and AI research. Responsibilities Your task is to collaboratively develop and implement practice-based teaching formats and courses that build a bridge from state-of-the-art research to teaching, in order to enable students on BA and MA level to understand and use AI as a new design “material” and partner in the creative process. You will play a key role in further developing the established AI+Design Lab into a lively, interdisciplinary hub and laboratory at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd. Your mission is to develop new courses related to AI or update long-running classic courses in terms of the creative use of AI to be integrated in the existing B.A. and M.A. curricula. This requires actively building collaborations with colleagues as well as setting up appropriate teaching and learning settings internally or within the network of the HfG. Qualifications Candidates must have professional track record in the field of Creative AI, Creative Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence or related fields, either practice, art or research based – and have to be proficient in relevant technical frameworks, methods and tools. Evidence of a high level of comprehensive, integrative understanding of different areas of design and its application is expected. Candidates must have a strong team spirit and be able to initiate and manage effective collaborations with colleagues from various design fields. Good communication skills (in an international but often German speaking institution) are important. Candidates must have a university degree, excellent subject-related accomplishments and pedagogical aptitude. Candidates are required to have at least five years of professional practice, including at least three years outside of academia. What we offer An unique combination of disciplines, including artificial intelligence, futures, strategic design, interaction design, product design and communication design. We are a teamoriented, interdisciplinary design university with 21 professors. The interim professorship is full-time and limited for one year in a non-tariff employment relationship with salary analogous W2.
