The Mass Spectrometry Centre (MSC) is located in the heart of Vienna at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Vienna. Besides scientific activities in developing new and improved computational and measurement methods, research is undertaken in biomedical and preclinical fields, generating innovative bioanalytical tools for tomorrow, today. We invite applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f/x) in analytical chemistry. Your future position in the team is characterized by an active participation in research, teaching, and administration. The lab seeks a talented, highly motivated analytical scientist to pursue lipidomics research with a primary focus on shotgun lipidomics and its implementation into the MSC’s service portfolio. The successful candidate will work with interdisciplinary teams (clinical, analytical, and bioinformatic scientists), apply shotgun lipidomics and related analysis to various fields, and streamline data analysis and integration across domains. Regular publication of scientific and methodological results is strongly encouraged. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to present complex results clearly and concisely, in a manner accessible to a diverse audience of quantitative, experimental, and clinical scientists.
The position is initially limited to 1 year, after which there is the possibility of permanent employment.
Your future tasks:
This involves:
- Developing and strengthening the candidate’s independent research profile
- Involvement in research projects and research studies
- International publications and presentation of results at national and international scientific conferences
- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
- Preparing/writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis
- Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students at all levels
- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
This is part of your personality:
- PhD in chemistry (or related topics), with a strong publication record in shotgun lipidomics.
- Profound knowledge of lipid structures and fragmentation rules.
- Solid understanding of the relevant concepts in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics and/or metabolomics.
- Enthusiasm for learning and applying new analytical methodologies.
- Broad experience in extraction techniques.
- Understanding of the statistical principles behind current best practices in the field.
- Strong experience using low-level programming languages such as R and Python.
- Strong communication, data presentation, and visualization skills. Therefore, English is required, and German is an advantage.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively and simultaneous handling of several fast-paced projects.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have:
- Teaching experience
- Experience working on research projects
- Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
- International presentation experience.
- Knowledge of university processes and structures (desirable)

- Experience in supervising students (desirable)
