Your personal sphere of play:

The Mass Spectrometry Centre (MSC) is located in the heart of Vienna at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Vienna. Besides scientific activities in developing new and improved computational and measurement methods, research is undertaken in biomedical and preclinical fields, generating innovative bioanalytical tools for tomorrow, today. We invite applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f/x) in analytical chemistry. Your future position in the team is characterized by an active participation in research, teaching, and administration. The lab seeks a talented, highly motivated analytical scientist to pursue lipidomics research with a primary focus on shotgun lipidomics and its implementation into the MSC’s service portfolio. Regular publication of scientific and methodological results is strongly encouraged. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to present complex results clearly and concisely, in a manner accessible to a diverse audience of quantitative, experimental, and clinical scientists.

The position is initially limited to 1 year, after which there is the possibility of permanent employment.

Your future tasks:

This involves:

  • Developing and strengthening the candidate’s independent research profile
  • Involvement in research projects and research studies
  • International publications and presentation of results at national and international scientific conferences
  • Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding

  • Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students at all levels

  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

This is part of your personality:

  • PhD in chemistry (or related topics), with a strong publication record in shotgun lipidomics.
  • Profound knowledge of lipid structures and fragmentation rules.
  • Solid understanding of the relevant concepts in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics and/or metabolomics.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and applying new analytical methodologies.
  • Broad experience in extraction techniques.
  • Understanding of the statistical principles behind current best practices in the field.
  • Strong experience using low-level programming languages such as R and Python.
  • Strong communication, data presentation, and visualization skills. Therefore, English is required, and German is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and simultaneous handling of several fast-paced projects.

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have:

  • Teaching experience
  • Experience working on research projects
  • Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
  • International presentation experience.
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures (desirable)
  • International work experience (desirable)
  • Experience in supervising students (desirable)

What we offer:

  • Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours, remote/hybrid and/or part-time work (upon agreement), flexible working arrangements and family-friendly structures.
  • Inspiring working atmosphere: You are a part of an international academic team in a healthy and fair working environment.
  • Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport.
  • Internal further training & Coaching: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge.
  • Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The position is initially limited to 1 year with the option of subsequent permanent employment. The basic salary of EUR 5.014,30 (14 times a year for senior scientists postdoctoral) increases, if we can credit professional experience.
