The University of Vienna hosts one of the most internationally visible management research environments in Europe, with its faculty consistently ranked among the top universities in the German-speaking world and among the finest in their fields internationally - emblematic of the continuous aspiration to add valuable insights to their academic fields.
Where will you be:
The position will be in the Organization unit inside the Department of Accounting, Innovation & Strategy. The department consists of approximately 45 people with 11 different nationalities. Members of the department have published in international top journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Management Science, Organization Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and the Strategic Management Journal. We regularly host conferences and seminars featuring colleagues from around the globe. The successful candidate will work closely with Thorsten Grohsjean, who joined the University of Vienna as a Professor of Organization in January 2026, after more than 9 years in the Department of Management & Technology at Bocconi University in Milan, first as an assistant and then as a tenured associate professor. He received his PhD from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and a Diploma in Management from the University of Mannheim. In his research, Thorsten Grohsjean explores how organizations shape their employees and how these imprints drive individuals’ decisions, which in turn affect organizational performance. He studies this indirect linkage across two streams. The first examines how organizational affiliations shape interpersonal relationships, affecting individuals’ dyadic interactions within and across organizations. The second focuses on resource allocation among competing alternatives. Specifically, he studies how organizational features, such as the structure of the decision-making process and the composition of the decision panel, shape the selection of strategic alternatives. Most of his research uses large-scale quantitative data analysis alongside semi-structured interviews. He uses unique data that he collects by scraping multiple data sources, most notably on the video game development industry and various sports (e.g., ice hockey, basketball, and soccer), or by collaborating with organizations. Recently, he has also relied on laboratory experiments.
What you will be doing:
In addition to their research, candidates assist with and participate in administrative tasks and teaching activities at all levels, including participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance.
What we expect from you:
- Outstanding records in a doctoral program and strong demonstrated ability or potential for high-quality research at the forefront of their field.
- Strong quantitative background in one of the following areas
- Strategy (preferably at the individual level)
- Innovation Management (preferably at the individual level)
- Organization Theory
- Organizational Behavior
- Ability and interest to teach in undergraduate and master's programs in English are essential.

- As an international group of researchers seeking to publish in leading journals, we rely on candidates being fluent in English (written and spoken; C1 level). Relevant study or work experience in a (native) English-speaking environment is therefore a strong plus. Knowledge of German is not required.
