The overarching goal of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History is to explore the history of humans using state-of-the-art analytical methods. Scientists from different disciplines, such as genetics, linguistics, archaeology, anthropology and history are working together to answer fundamental questions about the biological and cultural evolution of man from the paleolithic until today, and they jointly develop innovative methods, in particular in the areas of genome sequencing, language documentation, bioinformatics and phylogeography

We are seeking a

Scientific Coordinator

to start at the beginning of next year.

The main tasks of the position are:
  • Supporting the Managing Director and all other directors in the scientific management of the institute;
  • Serving as an interface between the scientific departments, the service departments, and the General Administration of the Max Planck Society in Munich;
  • Coordinating the cooperation and networking with universities as well as national and international research institutions;
  • Working with media and serving as public relations coordinator (point of contact for media enquiries, intermediation with scientific experts and cooperation with the press office of the Max Planck Society, planning and coordination of events and the production of display material to present the institute and its research activities);
  • Coordinating research and third-party funds (cross-departmental consultation and support of research applications; acting as the institute‘s EU representative);
  • Coordinating planned building activities on the institute site;
  • Organization and preparation of workshops and conferences; and
  • Coordinating the institute‘s guest program.
Qualifications for the position include:
  • A university degree in biology, anthropology, or a field related to the research of the institute (holding a PhD degree is desirable but not essential);
  • Professional experience in academic management, leadership and team-building;
  • Experience of public outreach and media;
  • Experience with public-funded research institutions or other nonprofit organizations;
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English and German; • Engagement with the research topics of the institute; and • Ability to work independently and pragmatically with high levels of motivation and strong communication and inter-personal skills.
We offer a 2-year position with the prospect to become permanent. The payment is according to TVöD, including usual employee benefits of public service. Salary will be determined both by the position‘s rank and individual factors.
