Senior Scientist at the Department of Biological Chemistry
The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, 178 fields of study, approx. 9.800 members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position as soon as possible of a
at the Department of Biological Chemistry
Reference number: 11270
The Department of Biological Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry announces a position for a senior scientist on the topic of chemical modulation of microbial interactions, virulence, and pathogenicity traits (research group Microbial Biochemistry, Böttcher lab). Further Information: The advertised position is associated with the newly established professorship of Microbial Biochemistry bridging the Faculty of Chemistry and the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science (DOME). The research group is currently based in Konstanz and will be moving to Vienna soon. https://www.chemie.uni-konstanz.de/boettcher
We are currently looking for a highly talented and highly motivated senior scientist (post-doc) with a strong background in Organic Synthesis, Analytic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Pharmacology, and/or Microbiology to join our Microbial Biochemistry Research Group at the University of Vienna. The position is provisionally limited to two years.
In our research group we explore chemical strategies for the customized modulation of bacterial population behavior with the goal of selectively interfering and controlling growth, motility, virulence and species interactions of human pathogens and commensals. We also investigate the chemical interactions of commensal and pathogenic bacteria as well as the chemistry of microbe-human interactions and aim to exploit the potential of the privileged structures of natural products by synthetic organic chemistry. We hereby focus mainly on novel anti-infective compounds including inhibitors of virulence and specific pathogenesis-associated targets as well as species selective antibiotics. Our vision is to develop customized chemical tools to selectively target viability, virulence and behavior of individual species in a complex microbiome which would open the possibility of chemical microbiome engineering in the future.
Duties and responsibilities of the successful applicant will include, but are not limited to:
- Participation and implementation of research projects on the aforementioned topics
- Isolation and structure elucidation of microbial natural products
- Design and synthesis of chemical tools
- Microbial metabolite analysis
- Target-based discovery of enzyme inhibitors
- Biological assay development
- Preparation of research reports, manuscripts for publications and oral presentations
- Supervision and training of students and staff members
- Support with administrative tasks, grant applications
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
Completed Doctoral/PhD in chemistry, life sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology pharmacology, microbiology, or similar.
