The Division of Microbial Ecology (DoME) at the Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology.
We are searching for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in bioinformatic methods relevant to the study of microbial ecology.
The position is currently limited to 4 years, with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment after internal evaluation.

Job Description:
As a Senior Scientist, the candidate will contribute to the research at DoME by planning and performing custom bioinformatic analysis. A major responsibility will be to design, implement and update bioinformatics pipelines and customized bioinformatics analyses in microbial ecology as well as being a resource for knowledge on emerging bioinformatic methods and implementing seminars to teach new methods to students and postdocs at DoME. The Senior Scientist will be expected to coordinate the computational activities of DoME with the Division of Computational Systems Biology (CUBE) within the Department of Microbial Ecology and Ecosystem Science. This will include installing and maintaining software on the Life Sciences Compute Cluster, attending group meetings at CUBE and participating in CUBE seminars. The successful applicant will also communicate with sequencing centers and national as well as international collaborators to manage data curation and analysis for diverse projects, and be involved in the publication of results in international peer-reviewed journals.
Involvement in the acquisition of third-party funding is expected. The position includes some administration and teaching as regulated by the collective agreement.
Profile:
Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in microbiology, bioinformatics or a related discipline, and relevant post-doc research experience (international experience is preferred).
A comprehensive knowledge of state-of-the-art methods in bioinformatics is required. Ideally, the candidate has advanced-level experience with computational analysis of complex microbial communities, including amplicon analysis, metagenomics and new binning approaches, metatranscriptomics, phylogenetics, and phylogenomics. Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization in R, and with using a computational cluster including job scheduling and maintaining environmental modules is advantageous. A strong background in environmental microbiology, microbial communities, microbial ecology, microbial elemental cycling, or biogeochemistry is preferred.
Demonstrated aptitude for scientific writing and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at relevant conferences is expected.
Very good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred. The ability to work in a team is essential.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have experience in supervising students at the Bachelor or Master level.
