The Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP) is home to over 140 doctoral candidates in Physics at the University of Vienna who work at the forefront of science. On their way to an internationally competitive PhD in Physics our students receive training, mentoring and support to become independent researchers and to connect with the local and wider science community. The Faculty of the VDSP advertises a paid position for a talented and motivated doctoral candidate in Physics interested in the structure and dynamics of soft matter under confinement to start at the earliest convenience with a contract duration of 3 years.
Duration of employment: 3 year/s
Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
We plan to investigate the temperature and pressure dependent growth of the interfacial liquid premelting layer. In the case of premelting, a liquid layer near interfaces emerges below the bulk melting point of ice. The presence of this nanoscopic liquid layer and its properties have important implications for friction as well as for macroscopic geophysical processes. Studying well defined and characterized ice/clay nanocomposite materials, this work is aiming to bridge the gap between studies on single crystalline ice/solid model interfaces and naturally occurring frozen soils and permafrost.
In this project, the successful doctoral candidate will investigate the growth of the interfacial layer and its physical properties by a combination of X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. Therefore, synchrotron experiments will be performed in collaboration with groups at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, and PETRA III at DESY in Hamburg.
Participation in research, teaching and administration: - Participation in research projects / research studies - Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations - We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months. - Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
