The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, is a world-renowned scientific institute devoted to improving public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccines and biomedicines both in Germany and throughout the world. PEI carries out its mission through scientific research and medicinal product regulation. Internationally competitive research is carried out in the fields of virology, microbiology, allergology, immunology, hematology and cell and gene therapy.
The PEI is establishing a Bioinformatics platform to support life science and regulatory projects at the PEI with a major focus on the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data. To this end, the following open position has to be filled at the earliest opportunity:

Key responsibilities
- To set up a bioinformatics platform at the PEI and develop in-house computational pipelines for analysis of omics datasets, with particular focus on Next-Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) platform for standard RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq, RC-seq, single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq), and single-cell DNA-seq (scDNA-seq).
- Utilizing available software and pipelines to generate and analyze NGS datasets from DNA- and RNA-based experiments;
- To apply bioinformatics techniques to published/unpublished data for the analysis and interpretation of omics datasets;
- To conduct data mining exercises by implementing public and self-made tools to mine for DNA-protein interactions, and cell type-specific transcriptional and epigenetic profiles to assist investigators elucidate the effects of transposable element insertions on host gene expression in human pluripotent stem cells and their differentiated derivatives.
- Aiding researchers select and use computational and statistical tools relevant to their projects;
- Incorporating information from published human and mouse genome, gene expression profiles, and genome-wide association studies in the analysis and interpretation of NGS results.
Essential criteria for applying / Job Requirements
- Ph.D. in the field of bioinformatics
- four-plus years' bioinformatics experience;
- excellent organizational and analytical skills;
- willingness to share understanding of bioinformatics approaches and tools and provide mentorship;
- ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team.
- experience in using the following software packages and databases: BLAST, InterProScan, R (programming language and free software environment for statistical computing and graphics), Cytoscape, Gene Ontology Database, ENCODE, RoadMap.
The position is limited to 3 years. The standard working week is 39 hours; part-time work is possible in principle.
