associated with a professorship (W3) for Animal Taxonomy and Systematics
at the University of Bonn
to be appointed on 1st of August 2019.
The mission of the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) is to contribute to the exploration and
conservation of global species diversity, to promote taxonomy and molecular biodiversity research, to develop tools required
for biodiversity monitoring, the documentation and analysis of ecological and evolutionary biodiversity changes, and to promote
knowledge transfer. Further on, ZFMK is a museum with significant public exhibitions on animals and habitats. ZMFK
is a public foundation and member of the Leibniz community. ZFMK is an internationally recognized research institution for
terrestrial and freshwater zoology and a nationally unique center for molecular biodiversity research.
We are seeking an exceptional, visionary and integrative leader and scientist for the position of director of this institution,
able to foster the ongoing development of the ZFMK as a globally leading institute for biodiversity research and biodiversity
monitoring. This process requires establishing research strategies in consultation with the Scientific Advisory Committee
and the Board of Trustees. Applicants should have experience in leading a research institution and fulfill the formal requirements
for holding a professorial chair. Scientific excellence of candidates includes outstanding contributions in the
fields of zoological taxonomy, phylogenetics, phylogenomics and its algorithmics, species-based and molecular biodiversity
research as well as successful fundraising. Applicants must be familiar with collection-based research and collection
management and must have taxonomic expertise. They should also have excellent communication and negotiation skills
and speak the German language fluently (CEF-level C2). The professorship is a permanent position, approbation as director
will initially be for 5 years; as a rule, approbation will be extended.
The Biology department and especially the zoological sciences cooperate closely with the ZFMK. Cooperative research
aims at analyzing interdependencies between environment, phenotype and genome as basis for sustainable biodiversity
management. For this purpose, prospective appointments of professorships should strengthen integrative evolutionary
research and nature conservation in terms of an applied and species-based ecological research. The director will simultaneously
hold a Chair for Animal Taxonomy and Systematics at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of the
University of Bonn; the formal appointment follows either according to the "Jülicher Modell." The teaching duties will be
reduced to 2 SWS; lectures and courses should be part of the international master program MSc. OEP Biology. For detailed
