Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of the leading research universities in Germany. As a reform-oriented campus university, it uniquely combines the entire range of the major scientific disciplines in one place. The dynamic coexistence of disciplinces offers researchers and students alike special opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation.

DOCTORAL AND POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS (M/F/T) 39,83 HOURS/WEEK

From 2019 on, the DFG (German Research Foundation) will establish the Cluster of Excellence 2092 "CASA ¬– Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries" at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. With the support of approximately 30 million euros over the funding period 2019 - 2025, Bochum will become one of the leading international locations for IT security. The CASA cluster pursues the goal of enabling sustainable security against large-scale adversaries, in particular nation-state attackers. The research is characterized by a strongly interdisciplinary approach which, in addition to technical questions, also investigates the interaction of human behavior and IT security. In CASA, researchers from the fields of computer science, cryptography, electrical engineering, mathematics and psychology work together in a constellation that is unique in Europe. This holistic approach of CASA is unparalleled and holds the potential for scientific breakthroughs.

CASA is based at the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security. It is regarded as one of the top research institutions, has Europe‘s largest IT security training programs, maintains extensive networks with the scientific communication and industry, and has produced numerous successful cyber security start-ups. In addition, the Max Planck Society plans to establish the "Max Planck Institute for Cyber Security and Protection of Privacy" in the immediate vicinity of the cluster, which will have a particularly stimulating effect on the CASA research. This outstanding environment offers excellent working conditions in an extremely topical and exciting field. In addition, CASA offers a friendly working atmosphere in a young and internationally highly respected research institution.

We are looking for excellent M.Sc. graduates with outstanding grades and degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics and psychology (preferably with a relationship to technology) or related disciplines. In addition, we are looking for outstanding postdoctoral candidates from these fields. In particular, we are looking for suitable candidates interested in the following Research Challenges:

RC 1 Cryptography against Mass Surveillance (Dan Bernstein, Eike Kiltz, Tanja Lange, Gregor Leander, Christof Paar)

RC 2 Quantum-Resistant Cryptography (Dan Bernstein, Holger Boche, Tim Güneysu, Eike Kiltz, Tanja Lange, Gregor Leander, Alexander May)

RC 3 Foundations of Privacy (Holger Dette, Markus Dürmuth, Thorsten Holz, Eike Kiltz, Alexander May, Konrad Rieck, Jörg Schwenk)

RC 4 Platform Trojans (Dan Bernstein, Tim Güneysu, Tanja Lange, Christof Paar, Nikol Rummel, Angela Sasse)

RC 5 Physical-Layer Security (Holger Boche, Tim Güneysu, Eike Kiltz, Christof Paar, Jörg Schwenk, Aydin Sezgin)

RC 6 Next-Generation Implementation Security (Dan Bernstein, Tim Güneysu, Dorothea Kolossa, Gregor Leander, Christof Paar, Aydin Sezgin)

RC 7 Building Secure Systems (Dan Bernstein, Lucas Davi, Sascha Fahl, Thorsten Holz, Martin Johns, Eike Kiltz, Jörg Schwenk)

RC 8 Security with Untrusted Components (Lucas Davi, Thorsten Holz, Martin Johns, Christof Paar, Konrad Rieck, Angela Sasse, Jörg Schwenk)

RC 9 Intelligent Security Systems (Holger Dette, Sascha Fahl, Asja Fischer, Thorsten Holz, Dorothea Kolossa, Konrad Rieck)

RC 10 Engineers and Usability (Sascha Fahl, Thorsten Holz, Martin Johns, Gregor Leander, Alexander May, Nikol Rummel, Angela Sasse)

RC 11 End-users and Usability (Markus Dürmuth, Sascha Fahl, Eike Kiltz, Dorothea Kolossa, Christof Paar, Angela Sasse, Jörg Schwenk)

We offer three-year positions for M.Sc. graduates. The expectation is to work towards a doctorate. Postdoctoral positions are limited to two years. The salary will be according to the remuneration group E 13 TV-L (full-time).

An above-average degree (Master‘s degree or doctorate, if applicable) in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, psychology (preferably with a relationship to technology) or related disciplines is mandatory for the application. Fluent spoken and written English is also required. In addition, applicants should have at least a basic knowledge of one or more of the research areas relevant to CASA: Cryptography, system security, embedded and hardware security, and usability. Moreover, postdoctoral students should already have published relevant papers at the leading conferences on cryptography and IT security.

Since the funding is provided by external third-party sources, M.Sc. graduates and postdocs are generally not obliged to take on teaching duties.

At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we seek to promote the careers of women particularly in those areas in which they are underrepresented, and we are therefore particularly pleased to receive applications from female candidates. Applications by suitable candidates with severe disabilities and other applicants with equal legal status are likewise most welcome.

Are you interested? Please send your complete application documents in one single pdf file (max. 10 MB) by February 28, 2019 to: career@casa.rub.de. Required documents are: Letter of motivation (please include in your letter the Research Challenge(s) 1-11 for which you would like to apply (multiple choices possible)), Mention at least 2 persons (supervisors, other researchers) as references (names and email addresses), Curriculum vitae, Master‘s certificate, Doctoral certificate, if applicable.
