The Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry located in Göttingen with about 850 employees is one of
the largest institutes of the Max Planck Society. Three Nobel Prizes have been awarded so far for outstanding
research carried out at the institute, with Prof. Stefan Hell being the most recent Nobel laureate.
The Department of Meiosis (Director Dr. Melina Schuh) is looking for an experienced researcher as a
Laboratory Manager (f/m)
in Molecular and Cell Biology and/or Advanced Live Cell Microscopy
(Code Number 37-16)
The aim of the Department of Meiosis is to investigate the mechanisms underlying meiosis in mammalian
eggs, using advanced live cell microscopy techniques. This topic is of great interest for fundamental research
because meiosis is still much more poorly understood than mitosis, especially in mammals. It is also of direct
medical relevance because defects in eggs are the leading cause of pregnancy loss and several congenital diseases
such as Down‘s syndrome. Research work combines high-throughput and discovery approaches based
on novel imaging methods with mechanistic hypothesis-driven projects. Dr. Schuh is also heading a satellite
laboratory at Bourn Hall Clinic, Cambridge, UK, the world‘s first in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic founded by
the pioneers of IVF Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe.
The Laboratory Manager will work closely with the director to assist with the general management of the department
as well as with the supervision and management of research projects. Maintaining active research in
these areas is possible depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate.
In detail, tasks will include:
Independent and proactive day-to-day non-scientific management of the department
Development and implementation of concepts for an optimal lab organization and working atmosphere
Assistance in supervision of research projects in the field of mechanistic cell biology
First point-of-contact for organizational, technical and scientific questions of laboratory members
Support in grant applications and scientific reporting
Teaching of lectures and organization of laboratory courses for university students
The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree in natural sciences. The initial appointment is for 3 years,
but we are very interested in a long-term work relationship. The payment and benefits are based on the TVöD
