PhD student (f/m/d) Online plan adaptation in proton therapy

At the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay scientists specializing in medicine, physics, biology and IT work together to substantially improve the treatment of cancer by administering radiation therapy that is biologically personalized and technically optimized.
As part of the institute, the Section of High Precision Proton Therapy invites applications as
PhD student (f/m/d) – Online plan adaptation in proton therapy
The position will be available from 1. January 2021. The employment contract is limited to three years. In the first year, this will be a 50% position, with the possibility to increase to 75% in the second year.
The place of work is Dresden. The working time amounts to 19.5 h/week.
Your PhD project is crucial for our long-term aim of realizing proton therapy of the next generation, making proton therapy online adaptive, realized by an online feedback-loop including in-room imaging, treatment verification and adaptation. Your scientific tasks include:
a comprehensive evaluation and selection of components of the feedback-loop
the development of a first workflow concept for the envisioned interaction of all components, including a risk analysis and identification of potential bottlenecks
to put special focus on the adaptation part in the loop by establishing a fast and quality-assured online treatment plan adaptation procedure in collaboration with academic and industry partners
This project is focused on translational research with the clear aim to impact tomorrows treatment of cancer patients. You will present results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, and also supervise students.
successfully completed studies in the field of medical physics or a comparable applied/natural science
experience in proton therapy and treatment planning is an advantage
knowledge in machine learning applications is an advantage, ideally for radiation therapy applications
good programming skills in a high-level programming language (Matlab, Python etc.)
interest in working as a team player in a group of motivated interdisciplinary professionals
structured and solution-oriented working methods, analytical thinking and above-average commitment
good communication skills in English and preferably also in German
