This is a research position within a multidisciplinary research centre for a talented postdoctoral
scientist with experience in neuroimaging to (a) develop their own programme of research, and to (b)
provide broad-based research support that draws upon a wide range of technical, methodological and
As part of their duties, the post holder will interface between technical and academic staff, support
other trainees and users of the facility, and contribute to the smooth running of the highly specialised
activities conducted in the centre.
The postholder will receive mentorship and supervision, and substantial resources to develop their
research, as well as further training and personal development opportunities.
Main duties and responsibilities
The post-holder will split their time between original research and research support. The distribution
of responsibilities will be arranged in collaboration with the Centre Director and will be adjusted
flexibly to match the needs of the Centre.
The post holder will develop a programme of research under the supervision of the Centre
director and in collaboration with members of the Centre, designed to support their transition
to research independence. In addition to mentorship and supervision, they will receive
substantial resources, including access to technology, datasets, training and networking
The post-holder will present their work at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed
In consultation with the Centre Director, the post-holder will contribute to funding bids for
personal fellowships or project grants.
Work with the MRI Operations Officer to maintain oversight for brain imaging, behavioural and
physiological measurement facilities in the centre, including consumables, licenses and the
overall maintenance of the systems, liaising with service providers and manufacturers when
Participate in the organisation and delivery of training, including identifying needs and
opportunities, both with regards to the acquisition of data and ensuing analysis.
Contribute to the development of new MR imaging methods, including novel approaches to
analyse data, as well as participate in the ongoing development of multi-modal and multipleregistration
Work closely with other support staff within the Centre and across the University to maintain
and organise health and safety policies, including identifying opportunities for improvement
and deployment of appropriate procedures.
Maintain oversight and manage access to computing facilities, including liaising with University
IT services, ensuring provision for deployment of research, including backup, i/o transmission,
and ensuing analysis of data.
Contribute to the design, maintenance and future development of the hardware and software
resource available to the centre.
The post-holder will be supervised by the Centre Director. Given the nature of this post, they must be
strongly self-motivated and able to work independently.
The post-holder, in conjunction with the MRI Operations Manager and the Centre Director, will be
responsible for training and oversight of all persons with access to the MRI Unit.
The post-holder will have contact with all users of the MRI Scanning Facility, including researchers,
students, study participants, and IT personnel. He/she will have contact with the Director, the
management team, and key academics involved in scanning research. He/she will liaise with Siemens,
and suppliers of research instruments, as well as with commercial users of the facility.
Terms and conditions
This is a fixed-term contract for up to 2 years. There will be some weekend working, or out-of-hour
work as necessary. Travel to national and international conferences will be expected.
There are no specific hours of work, but the appointee will be required to work such hours as would
reasonably be expected to carry out the duties associated with the post.
