Saarland University is a campusbased
university with international
focus and pronounced researchoriented
profile.
Saarland University is a research-intensive medium-sized campus-based university and
was one of the first universities in Germany to be system-accredited. It is characterized
by three main areas of Computer Science, NanoBioMed, and Europe. Numerous research
institutions in the vicinity of the university and the targeted promotion of business startups
make Saarland University an ideal environment for research, teaching and innovation.
With its location in the German-French-Luxembourg border region, a pronounced
international orientation is evident, for example by the high proportion of international
students. Saarland University has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2004.
The Physics Department within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland
University seeks to appoint a
W2-Professorship for Theoretical Physics of
Quantum Information (W 1901)
with an anticipated starting date of April 2022.
The successful applicant (m/f/d) is expected to work in the field of quantum information.
The research focus should be preferably on quantum algorithm theory, quantum machine
learning, quantum neural networks, or quantum artificial intelligence. Further topics of
interest include quantum simulations, quantum sensors, and quantum communications.
The pursued research shall strengthen the research topics in quantum information science
at Saarland University and in the existing CRC-TRR306 QuCoLiMa “Quantum Cooperativity
of Light and Matter”. The development of research activities at the interface between
physics and computer science are considered an important future direction.
The person to be appointed will be expected to contribute to teaching of theoretical physics
in its full breadth, as well as in the bachelor and master programs “Quantum Engineering”,
“Data Science and Artificial Intelligence”, and in the Saarbrücken-Jülich graduate school
on “Quantum Information and Computation”.
Aside from standards set by general employment legislation, eligibility criteria include
a University Degree in the corresponding or a related field, educational skills, proven
aptness for original scientific work (usually documented by the quality of the doctorate or
PhD) as well as an excellent track record of past independent research (e. g. habilitation,
junior professorship, DFG Emmy Noether Programme, ERC starting grant). Expected are
original publications in leading journals, the documented acquisition of third-party funding
as well as experience in staff management and academic administration.
Saarland University sees internationalization as essential part of its mission. We therefore
expect participation in related activities, in particular the ability to teach in English. Fluency
in German upon appointment is not essential. Special support will be provided for projects
that continue with or expand on collaborative interactions within existing international
cooperative networks, e. g. projects with partners in the European University Alliance
Transform4Europe (
www.transform4europe.eu) or the University of the Greater Region
(
www.uni-gr.eu).
