The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER), established by EDF and KIT, located in Karlsruhe is currently looking for a
Research Fellow f/m
in order to further develop the competences in the field of "Policy Analysis and Energy Market Studies" within the "Energy Transition, Markets, Environment" research group.
The increasing share of intermittent electricity generation, digitalization and the shift towards decentralisation challenge the market design put in place by EU commission and EU member states for the European energy sector. Decarbonisation, market integration of renewables, synergies between energy sectors, security of supply, and distributional effects are examples for key challenges that need to be tackled simultaneously by policy makers. EIFER monitors measures that European governments and utilities propose or put into place in order to cope with these challenges and analyses the impact of these measures on energy markets and business models.
The new employee will be in charge of analysing policies, fundamental drivers or incentives in the field of electricity and heat markets. Focus topics will include power networks, storage and flexibility services, and emerging business models for digital services, amongst others. This implies the political and legal analysis of larger reform projects with special regard to social transformations as well as the quantitative assessment of energy market developments and related business opportunities.
The assigned tasks involve:
monitoring and analysis of regulatory developments in energy markets with focus on decentralised electricity and heat generation, writing regular insight notes on specific measures
quantitative analysis of energy market data
model-based assessment of new business concepts
exchange with relevant stakeholders of the energy sector
regular business trips: participation in conferences and communication of results to clients
Required qualifications are:
The job applicant should hold a Master degree or equivalent in economics, industrial engineering or political science, and ideally has gained first professional experiences.
Profound knowledge on energy markets, renewable energy and related policy frameworks
Synthetic and analytic thinking and the ability to understand systemic interactions with other fields
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, very good level of French or German
Good knowledge in data analysis and management of database systems is seen as an advantage
Previous knowledge in simulation or optimization approaches and programming are seen as advantages
The applicant should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers. The duration of the position is initially limited to two years, starting in March 2018.
