Chair of Economic Geography
In 2010, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and several German universities jointly established the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS), located on the IITM campus in Chennai, as a platform for international academic exchange and interdisciplinary research collaboration on major sustainable development issues. In Germany, the IGCS activities are supported by the "TU9" group of Technical Universities (led by RWTH Aachen University) and Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. Focus areas of sustainability education and research at IGCS relate to water (partner: Kiel Univ.), waste (TU Stuttgart), land use and rural/ urban development (RWTH Aachen Univ.), as well as energy (TU Berlin).
The IGCS is part of the initiative "A New Passage to India" by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and receives funding from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) via DAAD and from the Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of India. German and IITM academic staff closely collaborate both in teaching and research.
At RWTH Aachen University the Post-Doc will be employed at the Chair of Economic Geography, Dept. of Geography. Here especially geographical issues of sustainable development are to be taken up in connection with IGCS, looking at rural-urban land use patterns and their transformation under conditions of a rapidly growing population, an intensified climate change and other environmental pressures. Various socio-economic development dynamics are regarded, combining perspectives of economic and human geography with those of social sciences, political sciences and other fields. In future activities, in particular governance and innovation related solutions for rural or urban tasks of hazard management and sustainability transformation shall be targeted.
We are looking for applicants who completed a Master and PhD degree in Economic or Human Geography, or related disciplines, and offer a strong research track record in any of the above-mentioned fields of sustainability research as well as experience in teaching her/his subject. You are fluent in English and German and display solid intercultural communication skills. Work-abroad experience and knowledge of the region are highly appreciated.
Your Duties and Responsibilities
You are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research and to design your own project ideas and focus areas in India. You should conduct research projects relating to issues of sustainable land use and regional development together with IGCS colleagues in different formats. You will be able to solicit research grants in Germany (e.g. DFG, industry) and collaborate with IGCS- area coordinators in Indian research projects. Beyond research you will support different teaching formats of the IGCS and contribute to further IGCS activities. Furthermore, you will be a point of contact for exchange students and scientists who are planning their DAAD funded stay in Chennai.
The position is limited until 31.12.2022 and is to be filled by January 01, 2019. The position is subject to the DAAD grant approval.
This is a full-time position. It is also available as part-time employment per request.The majority of your work time you are required to spend at the IGCS office at IITM in Chennai, at least six out of twelve months and preferably all year. The position thus involves some travel activities.
The salary corresponds to level EG 13 TV-L of the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
