The DZNE (German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases –
Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen e.V.) was established in 2009. Financed by the Federal Republic of Germany and by the eight federal Länder in which it has sites, the DZNE is a legally autonomous research institution and a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF), as well as being a German Center for Health Research (DZG).
The DZNE pools the expertise on research into neurodegenerative diseases which is distributed throughout Germany in a single research institution. The DZNE’s scientists – in Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock / Greifswald, Tübingen, Ulm, and Witten – work together across disciplines and sites to understand the causes of degenerative diseases of the brain and the nervous system, and to find novel approaches for effective prevention, therapy, and patient care so that these can be rapidly transferred into practical application. In order to provide such diversity, the DZNE pursues a translational and interdisciplinary strategy which covers five interlinked research areas: fundamental research, clinical research, health care research, population research, and systems medicine. It is one of the leading research institutes worldwide dedicated to these topics.
The DZNE currently employs around 1200 staff and has an annual total budget of approxximately €145 million at its disposal. The DZNE is based in Bonn, Germany. This is also where the organization’s headquarters are. The research center is led by an Executive Board which consists of one full-time Scientific Director / Chairperson of the Executive Board, and one full-time Administrative Director. Further information about the DZNE can be found by going to (
