Sedimentologist (f/m/d) of Polar Marine Continental Margins
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Sedimentologist (m/f/d) of Polar Marine Continental Margins
Polar continental margins are among the most important direct archives of the dynamic past of continental ice sheets. At the same time, these areas - particularly in Antarctica - are also among the least studied regions on Earth, which strongly affects our understanding of ice sheet stability in the geological past. Within the section Marine Geology, we therefore seek an experienced polar marine sedimentologist with the ability to integrate geological and geophysical datasets across different time scales. The work will focus on reconstructing ice-sheet dynamics and revealing related forcing mechanisms from ice-proximal records, which requires the following tasks.
Combined analysis of marine sediment cores and high-resolution marine geophysical datasets (e.g. bathymetry, seismics)
Determination of former ice-flow corridors and definition of past maximum ice-sheetextents and retreat patterns
Direct process analysis during former ice sheet coverage and retreat
Developing temporal constraints for past ice-sheet dynamic behavior
Determination and expression of forcing mechanisms for past ice-sheet retreats
This knowledge forms the basis for the evaluation of current rapid ice sheet changes and is essential for the calibration, validation, and improvement of numerical models that aim at predicting the future ice sheet and sea level behavior more accurately.
Excellent PhD degree in marine geosciences
Professional postdoctoral experience in the field of Polar Continental Margin Sedimentologyas demonstrated by a significant publication record in high-profile international journals
Ability to recover, process, analyze, and interpret marine sediment cores for the integration with geophysical datasets (e.g. bathymetry, seismics) from polar sedimentary systems
Strong interdisciplinary understanding for developing integrated knowledge across different disciplines such as palaeoceanography, glaciology, geophysics, and modelling
Extensive established network of professional national and international partners
Experience in the planning, realization, and participation of polar marine expeditions
Successful acquisition of research funds from third-party sources
Experience in university teaching and education
Excellent writing and speaking abilities of the English language
Team leading and coordination skills
Preparation and communication of scientific knowledge to the general public through publictalks and/or media contacts (public outreach) is highly desire
