The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, 178 fields of study, approx. 9.800 members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position from 01.11.2019 of a

Senior Scientist
at the Nanomagnetism and Magnonics
to 31.10.2020.

Reference number: 9641

The “Nanomagnetism and Magnonics” Research Group under the direction of Prof. Dr. Andrii Chumak at the Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna, is a young and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the fields of spintronics and magnonics. The research scope of the group encompasses magnonics, magnon spintronics, quantum magnonics at low temperatures, magnon-based data processing, and nonlinear spin-wave phenomena in nanoscale hybrid systems. We are looking for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in experimental physics to support the group in their forefront research on spin waves at low temperatures and will be responsible for the laboratory on Quantum Magnonics. The position is limited for one year with the possibility for extension.

Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
We expect the candidate to contribute to the goals of the “Nanomagnetism and Magnonics” Research Group as a Senior Scientist with a strong emphasis on magneto-transport and microwave measurements at low and ultra-low temperatures. The aim is to explore the foundations of quantum magnonics, magnon-based information processing, superconductive spintronics, and applications in quantum computing technology. The position implies the development and long-term maintenance of complex experimental instrumentation including cryostats operating at mK temperatures, microwave spectroscopy and optical local probe techniques. We invite applicants to submit their letter of intent, curriculum vitae, list of publications including the selection of five the most important articles, and diplomas.

Profile:
The successful candidate should have a doctoral degree in experimental physics, at least several years of research experience and an excellent track record in experimental low-temperature physics, ideally proven by a higher doctorate degree (habilitation). Experience in superconductivity and high-frequency dynamics of magnetic flux quanta is a requirement. Experience in magnetism, magnonics, direct-write nanotechnologies, and magneto-transport in hybrid superconductor / ferromagnet systems is highly desired. The position profits from extended training in thin-film growth and characterization technologies, microwave engineering, and generally highly developed experimental research skills.

An experience in (co-)supervision of students and teaching is beneficial.
