The Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 21 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre assembles an international, ambitious, and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The research group of Alexander Loy at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic PhD student in the field of microbial ecology and microbiome research.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This includes:
+ Involvement in a research project on the ecophysiology of gut microorganisms in health and disease
+ Publications and presentations
+ Involvement in project reports and project applications for third-party funding
+ Involvement in public outreach
+ Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
+ Supervision of trainees and students
The successful candidate will join the Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science https://vds-mes.univie.ac.at of the University of Vienna.
Profile:
+ Diploma or masters degree in biology, molecular biology, or equivalent qualification
+ Excellent command of written and spoken English
+ High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
+ Excellent team-working ability
Professional qualifications:
+ Very good knowledge in microbiology, especially microbial physiology and host-associated microorganisms
Additional qualification profile:
Methodological competences (one or more of the following):
+ Practical experience in microbiology and molecular biology. Methods such as cultivation of microorganisms, PCR and qPCR, fluorescence in situ hybridization, sequencing-based analyses, enzyme analyses, metabolite measurements.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have very good communication and organizational skills.
